German Karting Championships Report – Tyler Wheeler
Wheeler finishes in the points at Round 4
Round 4 of the German Karting Championships was held this past weekend at Ampfing, and Canadian racer Tyler Wheeler once again finished in the points with a solid 16th place result. A season high 32 entries were on hand for the KZ2 class, where the twisty layout makes passing difficult for even the most experienced competitors.

In preparation for the event Wheeler spent two days at the South Garda circuit in Italy, working on chassis setup, as well as gaining more valuable experience with the KZ2 package. In qualifying Tyler would put his AVG tuned PCR 25th on the sheets, however he was optimistic that with some minor chassis adjustments he could improve through the heats.

Although he would suffer a DNF in heat 1, Wheeler would show good speed and improve to 15th in his second heat, running times within a few tenths of the leaders. The DNF would prove costly though, leaving him 26th for the pre-final, at a track where passing is notoriously difficult. In the pre-final Tyler would find more speed, running his fastest times of the weekend, and moving up a couple of spots before getting stuck in a train of karts, all defending their position.

Starting from 24th, and with passing having been almost impossible throughout the weekend, a points finish seemed unlikely at this point. Wheeler was determined though, and after a good start he had moved into the top 20 by the midway point of the race. Then the skies opened up, leaving the drivers to contend with a wet track on dry tires. In the most difficult of conditions Wheeler excelled, passing a number of drivers and moving up to 12th position. The race was eventually red-flagged, and as per the rules, the results were reverted back 2 laps to determine the final finishing order. This would move Wheeler back to 16th, still an excellent points finish considering his starting spot.

Wheeler now sits 18th in the championship standings with the final round at Hans/Hunsruck coming up in August. Up next for Tyler is the final event of the Western Canadian Karting Championships at Stratotech Park in Edmonton. He is currently leading the standings in the ultra competitive Rotax Senior class and will be looking to secure the Championship for his Overdrive Motorsports PCR Team.
